Nikki Z to host U.S. based Dancehall talent competition

Dancehall Got Talent, the first North American talent show solely based on Dancehall and Dancehall themes, will be coming to the airwaves in the near future.

Dancehall Got Talent, the first North American talent show solely based on Dancehall and Dancehall themes, will be coming to the airwaves in the near future.

Popular media personality and disc jock, Nikki Z is set to host and co-produced the first televised Dancehall talent show in North America as Dancehall Got Talent is expected to hit the airwaves in the near future, according to reports Tuesday.

The show, produced by LA Wright and Kevin Beswick, is aimed at unearthing deejays and dancers based in the U.S. and promoting them worldwide. Dancehall Got Talent is scheduled to being airing in October and will be broadcast via OmniPresent Media (OPM) while the show will be streamed on Roku and can be watched on Apple TV, Xbox 360, iTunes and various other digital outlets.

A release issued by producers of the show intimated that the new show will enable the growth of Dancehall internationally.

“Dancehall Got Talent’s mission is to break down the walls and prejudices that have prevented the growth and development of the genre, while catapulting new artistes in dancehall to the mainstream,” the release said, while Nikki Z added, “For me, this is what I have been working for most of my career. The chance to really show how powerful and how magical the reggae dancehall culture is. The good, bad and ugly. To be an executive producer on such an historic adventure is something I can’t translate into words. This is just the beginning of much more to come – proves that belief in self is so important.”

The winning deejay of Dancehall Got Talent will receive US$5,000, a recording contract and global distribution deal while the victorious dance group will be brought back as the official dance crew for season two.

Dancehall diva, Timberlee along with recording artist, Ed Robinson, fashion expert and entrepreneur Dougie Platinum and IRIE Jam radio personality, DJ Roy will be the show’s judges while guest judge appearances and cameos are expected from acts such as Beenie Man, Mavado, Samantha J, Ce’Cile, Ace Hood, Danielle DI, Kes The Band and more.

The first open audition for Dancehall Got Talent will take place at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens, NY this Friday while registrations for said auditions will be closed on Sept. 1. For those interested in auditioning, call 347-502-8310, email dancehallgottalent@gmail.com or visit the official Dancehall Got Talent website here for more information.

by Jodee Brown

BET’s hit countdown show, 106 & Park will get another injection of Jamaican culture this coming Wednesday as a myriad of Dancehall, Reggae and Soca acts are set to perform at the show and do interviews.

On the lineup are Reggae/Dancehall superstars, Gyptian, Wayne Marshall and Elephant Man, who performed at last year’s BET Awards, as well as One Drop singer, QQ, emerging newcomer, Kranium as well as Soca superstars, Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons. Also featured on the show will be A$AP Ferg, known for his single, Shabba, a hip-hop ode of sorts to Dancehall legend, Shabba Ranks.

Garlin confirmed the news via his Twitter account, saying, “Everything packed and ready to step over to 106 and Park. Get ready to see the performances August 27th by yours truly the Vikingz and also with Fay-Ann Lyons, A$AP Ferg, Wayne Marshall, Elephant Man, Kranium, Gyptian and more. It’s the Carnival Take-over Labour Day style and it is going to be WILD. We are stepping to represent as one people for one people.”

Marshall also shared his excitement about the show via his Instagram page, “Caribbean people, we are going to be taking the music and culture to BET …we are moving together as one people. Full take-over,” while QQ confirmed during an interview aired Friday on TVJ’s Entertainment Report that he will be performing the aforementioned One Drop as well as another of his big hits, Stookie.

Last year, 106 & Park did a similar Caribbean-themed show, The Caribbean Takeover last September that featured Beenie Man, Wayne Wonder and Mr. Vegas.

Highlights from the Rita Marley Foundation back-to-school fair held in the community of Standpipe on August 8.

by Jodee Brown

On Friday August 8, the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) held a Back to School Fair for the children of the Standpipe Community in Kingston.

Almost 100 children from the community converged at the Standpipe Basketball Court for an afternoon of fun. The Foundation gifted everything at the fair to the kids for free. They enjoyed treats, music, rides and games.

Stephanie Marley (RMF Director) and Rosemary Duncan (RMF Manager) presented each child with Back to School supplies; including books, bags, pencil cases and other stationary. The Standpipe Community Councilor, Mr. Little, presented gift vouchers to the kids.

Parents and guardians expressed much gratitude to the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) for its generosity.

This initiative comes nearly a month after the winner of another student-friendly initiative, the inaugural Rita Marley Foundation Essay Competition was announced. Omar Ford, a 16-year-old student out of Papine High School, was named the winner of the competition, aimed at educating youth through writing and music. His essay was selected by an esteemed panel of judges: Dr. Kadamawe Knife, a lecturer at University of the West-Indies (UWI), Dr. Donna Hope, the director of the Institute of Caribbean Studies at UWI, Dr. Raymond Hitchins, an ethnomusicologist at the university as well as Dr. Leachim Semaj, with Rita Marley OD being the chief judge.

His essay was published in the newest edition of Harambe, the official Rita Marley Foundation newsletter.
