Rebel Vibez host Carrie Mullings as MC at Calgary’s ReggaeFest 2013

Carrie Mullings, much more than a popular Canadian radio personality for Rebel Vibez Radio

Carrie Mullings, much more than a popular Canadian radio personality for Rebel Vibez Radio

by

Good day, reggae massives! I’m honoured to be working in cooperation with Toronto’s Carrie Mullings, the popular and professional host of the Rebel Vibez radio show that airs every Monday from 10AM – noon EST (7AM – 9AM in Vancouver) on Toronto’s CHRY,http://www.chry.fm/index.html. Last week her co-host was Richie Spice; stay tuned, as you never know which celebrity will be joining her on the airwaves next.

Rebel Vibez host Carrie Mullings as MC at Calgary’s ReggaeFest 2013.

To say Carrie is a radio host is just the tip of the Rebel Vibez iceberg. She is an artist manager, promoter, travels across Canada as an events MC, and is deeply rooted in music business activities, the likes of which the average listener doesn’t even realize are necessary to develop an artist and produce all types of material, publicity, networking, bookings, recording collaborations, studio time, sponsorship.

Somewhere in there she, and I, and so many lovely, talented and strong women I work with in the music industry find personal down time and energy to deal with our children and the rest of our family, go shopping, cook dinner, and WHAT? Actually sit and relax, read a book, do a Sudoku puzzle, or get going on those crochet ideas?

Those are some of the things I made time for this weekend, but my mind was still running on the blog, knowing I’d planned to keep it updated more often. It’s my innate nature to promote events I figure are musically worthwhile and like to encourage people to attend. Carrie’s weekend was a little different- road trip managing Rebel Vibez Records artist & Vancouver homegirl Elaine Lil’Bit Shepherd as she shared the stage with Luciano for three of his Canadian dates in Brantford, Toronto, and Montreal.

I will be doing this week’s Rebel Vibez West Coast Events calendar tonight, but for now Vancouver has two major reggae shows this week- Mad Professor with Ras Nikhilesh, DJ Capn rEdEyEzz & DJ Lt. Irie at Fortune on Thursdayhttps://www.facebook.com/events/517327855010705/?ref_dashboard_filter=calendar; and Spragga Benz on Sunday with Fredlocks Asher & The UltraFlex Crew, E-Spliff, Wassawa, Gisto, OSC, and DJs Tank Gyal, LT. Irie, & Aremshttps://www.facebook.com/events/518447624899527/?ref_dashboard_filter=calendar.

Vybz Kartel trial postponed twice in two days, peers claim conspiracy

With delays mounting in the ongoing legal situation involving embattled Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel, some of his friends are crying foul, insisting postponements in the deejay’s murder case are part of a conspiracy to keep him in jail.

On Monday, Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer was expected to stand trial in theBarrington ‘Bossie’ Levy case inside theHome Circuit Court. However, the matter was put off until Tuesday after prosecutors claimed a case file was missing, causing a halt to proceedings.

On Tuesday morning, the trial was set to kick off after prosecutors located the file, insisting it was misplaced. However, the trial was again postponed until Wednesday considering that other cases were being mentioned before it.

Monday’s postponement in particular raised eyebrows, particularly amongst some of Kartel’s peers, who say the missing file is just the latest in an ongoing ploy to keep the ‘Worl’ Boss’ incarcerated.

The most vocal of his peers, Elvis Redwoodsays he believes these delays are excuses being used to extend the legal process for as long as possible.

The veteran producer and So Unique Records head told the Jamaica STAR“They are just trying to delay the process and I hope the judge sees through this ploy. This is being drawn out for too long, look how much man trial start and finish already. It’s strange that they can’t find a document of that nature, and I think this is just a move to delay the entire process.”

Similarly, Kartel’s protégé, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler also believes there is a conspiracy, but hopes the entertainer will soon be freed.

“To be honest, I don’t have much to say but I know my prayers are not going in vain, and who God bless no man curse,” she told the STAR. “I can’t wait for this thing to be over, so that he can come a road and these delays are out of spite to keep him locked up.”

Kartel is also awaiting the commencement of the Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams murder case, which will begin within the window of Nov. 18-Dec. 6. He, along with Gaza Slim face conspiracy charges which are tied to the case. Gaza Slim says these legal issues are hurting her earning potential and preventing her from travelling overseas.

“This thing is preventing me from travelling so I want it to be over with because it is stopping my income and I have bills to pay,” she said. “But in God I put my trust and I know it must be over one day.”

Kartel faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm in the Burton case. The deejay along with two other men, Lenburgh McDonald and Nigel Thompsonare accused of participating in the shooting death of Burton was he was walking along Gregory Park in St. Catherine in July 2011.

Kartel has been incarcerated since September 2011.

Fresh from a successful Canadian tour in June, where he performed for full house venues in cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver, Popcaan has remained at the forefront of the Dancehall scene; from climbing charts to performing sold out shows worldwide.

Now Popcaan has raised the bar as he has performed to sold out concerts in Europe on his European Summer 2013 Tour, playing major festivals in Germany, France, Switzerland and Holland over the past two weeks. Of significance was his first time performing with a band on such festivals asAfro Latino in Belgium and SummerJam in Germany.

After rocking a crowd 30,000 strong at SummerJam, Popcaan said, “It was an amazing experience, its great to see how the people accept the music, SummerJam is a special vibe and a every energetic crowd”

He will return to Jamaica just in time for the highly anticipated Reggae Sumfest, one of the biggest nights for music in Jamaica, at the end of July. After a critically acclaimed performance last year, the deejay looks forward to delivering on Dancehall Night yet again.

In between tour dates and appearances, the Dancehall artist is still working assiduously in the studio. Last summer the ‘Unruly Boss’ dominated with the release of his award winning hit single,When We Party. His recent release, Unruly Rave forHapilos Digital Productions seems poised for similar success with heavy rotation on the radio, in the clubs and in the streets. He commemorated the summer by releasing the video for the track on the first day of the season. The video shoot for another track, the Jam 2 Recordsproduced single, Wine Like That was also just completed, which fans can also look out for this month.

Popcaan’s latest collaboration, First Time with Megan James from the group, Purity Ring is being featured in the Puma Dance Dictionary and gaining traction worldwide. Additionally, Popcaan will be adding a number of international collaborations to his growing catalogue this year as well as songs featuring both U.K. and U.S. based artistes can be expected.

Presently his worldwide hit, The System is in rotation on MTV Jams and VH1 Soul. Of this song Popcaan says, “It’s a song that the people just love, it a sing along everywhere when I perform it and it has nearly 2 million views on YouTube on my page alone, so maybe 5 million all over the internet so with MTV rotation it can only keep growing.”

Popcaan’s full length album is almost complete, with finishing touches being done. The album will be crafted by the ingenious Dre Skull of MixPak Records along with well known Jamaican producers. The first single from the album will be released in September 10.

Embattled Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton has received a reprieve in his fight to overturn his drug conviction as a gun charge against the entertainer was dismissed during a hearing inside a Florida courtroom Wednesday afternoon.

The ruling, handed down by Judge James Moody was made after it was determined that Terri Wright, a juror in Buju’s February 2011 drug trial, violated federal court orders by independently researching aspects of the singjay’s case. This means that Buju, currently serving a ten-year prison term on several drug-related charges, will not have to serve five additional years as a result of the gun charge, which was reinstated following a failed appeal last summer.

Judge Moody has ordered the United States government to slap a criminal contempt charge against Wright as a result of her alleged misconduct. Wright could face up to six months in prison, as well as a fine if found guilty on contempt.

Buju’s lawyer, Chokwe Lumumba maintains that he was happy about the judge’s rulings, but thinks the entire drug case against his client should have been thrown out, telling the Tampa Bay Times, “If we can’t believe her on the Pinkerton issue, we can’t believe her on anything else.”

Last October, Buju’s legal team requested that the entertainer’s drug conviction be overturned and that he be granted a new trial days after a report came out in a Florida newspaper that Wright had admitted to researching facts of Buju’s case on her laptop.

During a hearing in April, it was found that Wright has submitted the wrong hard drive to a forensic examiner hired by Buju’s legal team as they tried to determine whether Wright had researched aspects of the singer’s drug case during the February 2011 timeline. This revelation led to Wednesday’s hearing, where Wright was deemed to have lied about her behavior during the trial.
