On Friday August 8, the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) held a Back to School Fair for the children of the Standpipe Community in Kingston.

Almost 100 children from the community converged at the Standpipe Basketball Court for an afternoon of fun. The Foundation gifted everything at the fair to the kids for free. They enjoyed treats, music, rides and games.

Stephanie Marley (RMF Director) and Rosemary Duncan (RMF Manager) presented each child with Back to School supplies; including books, bags, pencil cases and other stationary. The Standpipe Community Councilor, Mr. Little, presented gift vouchers to the kids.

Parents and guardians expressed much gratitude to the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) for its generosity.

This initiative comes nearly a month after the winner of another student-friendly initiative, the inaugural Rita Marley Foundation Essay Competition was announced. Omar Ford, a 16-year-old student out of Papine High School, was named the winner of the competition, aimed at educating youth through writing and music. His essay was selected by an esteemed panel of judges: Dr. Kadamawe Knife, a lecturer at University of the West-Indies (UWI), Dr. Donna Hope, the director of the Institute of Caribbean Studies at UWI, Dr. Raymond Hitchins, an ethnomusicologist at the university as well as Dr. Leachim Semaj, with Rita Marley OD being the chief judge.

His essay was published in the newest edition of Harambe, the official Rita Marley Foundation newsletter.
