Jambana is on!

The JAMBANA™ festival returns August 6th, 2012 with a new location in The Meadow at Downsview Park.

JAMBANA™ has been designated the Official Canadian Celebratory Event by the Government of Jamaica, in commemoration of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence. The event is also connected to celebratory events in Jamaica, London, England and New York.

Produced by Jones & Jones Productions Ltd., the event displays the vibrancy of Canada’s cultural mosaic in its finest form, through music, dance, food, culture, history, information and edutainment and this year the bar has been raised in light of the Olympics and Jamaica’s independence. Jamaica is a powerful nation and although we have been independent for only 50 years, the history predates Columbus’ arrival in 1492.

‘’Reggae music plays a big role in Jamaican culture and over the years it has been embraced by many countries around the world and as a nation with a motto, “Out of many one people” we also say boldly that we are fantastic at sports! So we anticipate another record breaking Olympics and will be sharing with our JAMBANA™ audience the presentation of the Men’s 100m and the women’s 200m along with other Olympic highlights. “Jamaica is more than sports and music though and we will demonstrate the strong hues that Jamaican’s in Canada continue to weave into this country’s cultural mosaic”, says Denise Jones, JAMBANA™’s Executive Producer.

A fun-for-the-family day of food, music, dance, comedy, and good times, JAMBANA™ is the perfect way to spend your civic holiday. Partial proceeds are being donated to Jamaica 50 Inc’s legacy initiatives.

The day will also feature main stage performances by internationally acclaimed reggae bands and JUNO award winners accompanied by the rhythms of Jazz and Gospel. Dance troupes and hilarious comedians provide the very best in entertainment. This year’s line-up includes: Andrew Tosh, son of the late great Peter Tosh, Ken BootheJosey WhalesByron Lee’s Dragonaires and The Hertford Folk and Cultural Group.

Canadian entertainers include Divine Brown, Dru, Exco Levi, Steel, Amoy and Mountain Edge, as well as the Caribbean’s King of Comedy, Oliver Samuels.
