On March 7, 2012, I published an article regarding the release of excerpts from Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer’s debut book, Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto from behind bars.
In said article, which traced back to a letter issued by Vybz Kartel to University of the West Indies professor, Carolyn Cooper, I made an incorrect contextualization of the nature of the relationship between the two individuals by stating that she was a ‘long-time friend,’ of Kartel; an unfounded contextualization at that.
After concerns expressed by Professor Cooper regarding that phrase, I fully understand that such an assertion would trigger misperceptions amongst the general public in relation to the nature of their relationship and as such, would create the notion of her being a Kartel defender or supporter. With that in mind, I humbly apologize to Professor Cooper for using that phrase and hereby retract that statement, ‘long-time friend’ regarding the article in question and any misrepresentations that said phrase had caused
